I am getting the hang of using Alpine from the wiki guides, so far unable to get xorg running under Virtualbox. On running startx I get no screens found error. vesa,intel,vmware drivers are loaded and i did setup-alpine (sys).

X does not start either for user or root, as i have not used openrc before i do not really know it I need to start a service (dbus) or add modules.

Once I get X running I might enjoy messing about with Alpine more as I will have Firefox too give me answers to many questions I have.

I'm in the same boat. Minus the gparted though. No matter the driver installed I can' t get a vbox running @ xorg + xfce or mate.

I tried both standard and vanilla @ versions all the way back to 3.0 and still can't get xorg to configure or start.
Using Edge I can it to start but its a blinking screen and never loads the desktop.

I've Been dying to try out alpine since the debian devs lost their collective minds. My choices came down to alpine or openbsd but openbsd is missing a lot of the software I need. Alpine has most things I require for desktop usage not to mention the patched kernel :) Thus far the only apps I've been unable to find are jnettop and terminator. But they're most likely build-able.

Any ideas or tips would be hugely helpful.

If it helps the VBox version is:
4.3.18 Debian

Most recent attempt was with the Standard alpine-3.2.1

Searching seems it is a well known issue, might try Alpine on a real machine over weekend. Unless I am missing something heard some good things about Alpine and am eager to try it out... but I do need a desktop ;-)

I was thinking the same thing. Its just so much easier to learn the OS in a vm.
I'm also a little worried about virtual support inside alpine as I use vm's all the time.

I would get a cheap USB stick and boot off that or pick up a used old PC on Craigslist for next to nothing, screen disk keyboard and all. Here's stuff I found on VMs.

"Caveat: the Alpine Linux VirtualBox guest additions are currently in testing...so you're limited to a VirtualBox screen size of 800x600"

"acpid

If you installed your Alpine Linux as a VirtualBox or VMWare guest you might find it handy be able send ACPI shutdown.

rc-update add acpid"

"However you can still configure xorg-server by hand by launching:

Its nice to see the virtualbox-additions-grsec but it didn't help. Also they're only in x86 :(
fwiw - just tried a full install of x86 and it was a nogo. After the first failure I did a full update to Edge then testing.

The rest of the stuff has been tried 100 times over. And extra hardware isn't the issue, have plenty around. The issue is this really seems to be a bug as its completely non functional. Even vesa doesn't work which is nearly unheard of lol.

Post X failure logs? Alpine ships a Xen image you can try, or for that matter, Wayland.
http://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/main/x86/wayland

Articles on the 1.17 server:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=search&q=X.Org+Server+1.17
Highlights: modesetting tweaks, auto config, ABI change. Disable modesetting in VMs for troubleshooting.

I found more VM and video stuff on Alpine's XFCE page:
http://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/XFCE_Setup

"To see available video driver packages run:

apk search xf86-video

Use xf86-video-cirrus for qemu/kvm guests. Use xf86-video-vmware for Virtualbox/VMware guests. Use xf86-video-geode for Alix1D.

To search for xf86-input driver packages run:

apk search xf86-input

As good choice for the start is:

apk add xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard"

@AlpineInterest
If you're not a bot of some sort -> I appreciate that you're trying to help. However posting what ever you find on the first page results of google and or the alpine wiki really isn't all that helpful. If you read the thread you'll realize we've tried said video drivers.

Now, If you ARE a bot -> Go recode yourself so you're able to install virtualbox and then the latest version of alpine. Then when it fails you can come auto post in these forums asking for help and regurgitate the same simplistic and semi nonsensical information to yourself. If you follow the auto-responses you made to your auto posts this will probably send your program into a never ending loop that's doing nothing more than wasting the electricity of the wall socket the machine your running on is plugged into. -One can only hope you're program is running on a green friendly machine.

-Cheers

@WillieW0nka Post your X logs already. WTF was that. Alpine documentation is scattershot and out of date. Gathering relevant links isn't easy. Stop bitching about bots.

Did you xorg starting anywhere in that article?

Xorg won't start thus acpi shutdown from inside a DE has nothing to do with anything.

This should be a given...

"I get no screens found error" was in the original post. And Xen has nothing to do with virtualbox. X86 wayland? Seriously?

I won't even comment on this...

Read the thread FFS.

What is the fuck does intel video have to do with xorg running in virtualbox... Nothing...

@AlpineInterest -regarding bots
I've done forum support in the past and have come across bots that do exactly what you were doing. Scan the post for tags, then reply with information pertaining to the tags flagged in the initial scan.

However figuring out its a bot is generally simple. -bots have no common sense. aka they don't read the entire post and at least attempt to get the gist of what the persons saying. Nor do they attempt to figure out what the person has done or is capable of doing based on the perceived experience level of the user making said posts.

Thus my conclusion is:
A. You're a bot.
B. You're not a bot but just a person with no common sense. In which case you should really contact Dell for a job in tech support.
Or C. { and, C, is, my, favorite; }
C. You Went Full Retard

If you had actually read the thread you would have quickly realized 99% of what you posted was:
A. Utterly worthless
B. Already been tested by multiple people.

Frankly I'm not going to bother posting logs of any kind unless a dev or someone with half a brain requests them. This issue can be replicated easily in vbox. When the devs have free time I'm sure they'll check it out.

In the meantime I'll probably just toss it on hardware and see how it goes.

@mrgreen
If I'm not banned I would love to hear your results @ hardware.

@devs, mods ect.
I apologize for being so troll'ish. I'm normally not like this. But this guy...

ya it sounds like a bot for sure lol all the info gathered was irrelevant to what hews asking lol @ the Intel driver post. (doing this from a Virtual Environment common now) if u are not a bot then u have gone full retard. sad to say ill not be testing alpine due to lack of community and a few other things i will not be commenting on. so take care and plz write a better bot script to post in forums yours blows peace.

@mrgreen Apologies on behalf of the intertubes for these kids. I'm packing for summer vacation. I'm sure you'll figure things out by the time I return.

Managed too finally get X working (of sorts) for some reason system was not fully update too date. Once update/upgrade completed I was able to startx, at the moment it is just a blank screen with no mouse or keyboard working. Now I have no ethernet connection at all, eth0 does not exist any more, this was after mkinit ran.

This is all under Virtualbox...

I could not get usb (i686) to boot on my old laptop at all.

I updated to VirtualBox 5.0 tried Alpine again. startx still fails with no screens found. I have install all the video drivers for Xorg. Xorg try to find a driver, but fails. Maybe there's a way to force Xorg to load a VGA, or VESA driver. Or wait for the VirtualBox Guest Driver package.

I was also having a helluva time getting Xorg going in a VM.

For me, it was a matter of installing the xf86-video-qxl driver and making sure it was in-use in virt-manager.

Hope this helps someone.

I had the same problems with VirtualBox.
If you're using the latest VirtualBox on Windows 10 it kinda fails somehow to start xorg. Instead of VirtualBox I tried VMware and it works like a charm.
I guess this will help someone in the future.
