Just setup alpine and xfce on an old desktop wow its blazing fast well done to the folks behind the scene .. also added a user that just opens browser when out and about and want a fast browse on older hardware

It looks a nice busy forum where i can buy nike trainers and jerseys and lotsa cracked software

Wow I just came to report the exact opposite.
I was suprised that on the same disk, on the same hardware, portergos was running better with xfce4.
This is on a dell optiplex 755. Intel core2 duo + 2gb ram.

What I thought at first was disk latency turns out to be some kind of strangeness in the video driver. Perhaps I have the wrong one, but this should be intel chipset.
I added the framebuffer package which makes everything smoother, but it's just as slow. especially opening the applications menu, or any program, it's so slow, so much latency.

Maybe it's the xen kernel? I doubt it.
suggestions from anyone?

I've not solved this yet, but apparently the amount of ram shown in xfce4 taskmanager is wrong. It thinks it's using 60% of 2gb of ram, when it's really using under 200megs
