At the moment I would try Alpine for a lightweight DE.
Is there a atom editor package planned or available?

Never heard of that text editor but it looks nice. You might try Geany. Its a highly configurable programmer's text editor, and themable to look just like atom. Just search for 'dark themes for geany'.

Atom starts a little bit slow, but have nice features like multiple cursors (multi edit) and a (rudimentary) git integration and additional plugins.
I try to move from Netbeans to Atom because of plugins like ungit (only tested ungit, but seems to be interesting), multi edit, autocomplete (stubs.php support by php-integrator-base) ...

Atom is based on nodejs / chromium.
