I asked a somewhat lengthy question about this over on Stack Overflow so I won't retype the whole thing here, but I thought you folks might know more about it. Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum for this kind of thing.

I am beginning to think that the issue is related to some kind of failure in modloop. It fails to start and then /lib/modules is empty. Any tips on debugging modloop? All I get on the console is "ERROR: modloop failed to start" the logs don't have anything more helpful.

there is a bug in the script which mount the modloop when in nfs boot.see http://bugs.alpinelinux.org/issues/4015
A patch was proposed and a solution was provided a couple of days ago. But this solution is not maistream yet.
Meantime, the solution is to patch manually the /etc/init.d/modloop script and to lbu add it to the apkovl provided by the PXE server.
