I understand that both Android and Alpine both start with "a" but Android .apk's are one of the most commonly used files in the world.

I thought it was a given that companies tried not to use extension's that were commonly used.

Using exe , apk , dmg etc. seem's like a strange decision to make.

I think the main reason for this is the difference between code and code. Even when 2 linux distro uses the same extension like RedHat, Fedora, CentOS with the rpm, sometimes what works on RedHat, doesn't work on Fedora. And the deffierence there between the two systems are very little, but just enough.

For you reference:

Android was introduced in 2008: https://android-developers.blogspot.nl/2008/09/announcing-android-10-sdk-release-1.html

Alpine apk-tools in 2005: https://sourceforge.net/projects/apk-tools/files/apk-tools/0.0.5/
