Xen nested in VMware

Hi,
I have successfully booted Alpine 2.7.5 from the ISO inside VMware. However, I can't get alpine-xen-2.7.5 (or 2.6.6 either) to boot.
It just hangs after outputting "PM : Registering ACPI NVS region [mem 0x17efff000-0x17efffff] (4096 bytes)". I have tried this in VMware Fusion 6 on Mac OSX 10.8 and VMware Player 6 on Fedora 20.
Both systems are Core i7s with all the appropriate virtualization support turned on and passed through to the guest.
A "grep vmx /proc/cpuinfo" in the guest (when using the non-xen ISO) shows the vmx flag.
I installed to hard disk using the non-xen version. It came up okay. I then did "setup-xen-dom0". It just loops on:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
mount: mounting xenfs on /proc/xen failed: No such file or directory
xc: error: Could not obtain handle on privileged command interface (2 = No such file or directory): Internal error
FATAL: Failed to open connection to hypervisor: No such file or directory [ !! ]
* ERROR: xenstored failed to start
* Starting xenstored daemon ...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone have any ideas? Is it something not set right in VMware? Perhaps just a VMware 6 common bug?
