I just spent some time looking in on Alpine again, hoping things had gotten better. I installed it on a Thinkpad W510. The installation went smoothly (I have notes that I made from previous installs; I have found the installation documentation very inadequate and have said so in previous posts). The trouble started when I installed chromium. When I went to preferences to log in, there was no text -- I mean NONE -- on the setup page. I went I did an 'apk search font' and went through installing everything that might be useful. I compared the font packages Alpine offers to the installed fonts on an Arch system I have, where chromium works fine. I must have installed 20 font packages and nothing helped. Thinking "how often to I use the preferences page?", I got the preferences set the way I needed them by having another machine (running Arch) next to me, with its preferences page displayed and using that as a guide. Then I tried gmail. No text. At that point, I gave up.

I observed the above behavior both with chromium installed from edge repositories and 3.4 repositories.

I'd be curious if anyone has an answer to this problem, as I do have an old Toshiba netbook running Alpine and having the option of a working chromium might be useful at some point.

It does seem that there are some dependencies (on font packages) missing from the chromium package.
