xfce4 desktop won't load

after installing running setup-xorg-base apk add alpine-desktop xfce4 rc-update add lxdm rc-service start lxdm the xfce4 desktop environment won't load correctly. all I get is a flashing screen instead of the login screen. this only happens with alpine 3.1 and after 3.0 works fine for me.
installed alpine 3.0 where the xfce4 desktop loads correctly and then upgrading the system but when I reboot the same thing happens. is there anyway to upgrade all the important/necessary security packages while leaving all the desktop stuff as it is?
also I tried editing the repositories changing it from 3.0 to 3.1.2 but this didn't work either it said it could find the mirror returned 404 error.
